Revision Rhinoplasty Houston
Revision rhinoplasty, also known as secondary rhinoplasty, is a delicate, specialized surgical procedure to correct or enhance the results of a previous rhinoplasty surgery—about 5%-15% of rhinoplasty patients seek secondary rhinoplasty. Dr. Taylor DeBusk’s advanced training and experience has given him first-hand knowledge of the profound impact revision rhinoplasty has on his patients’ self-esteem and quality of life. But it’s essential to approach revising your nose surgery with the right information and expectations.

Understanding Revision Rhinoplasty Surgeries
Revision rhinoplasty is typically more challenging than primary rhinoplasty surgery due to alterations in the nasal anatomy from the previous procedure(s). This can include changes in the nasal skin, bone, and cartilage, as well as the presence of scar tissue. Dr. DeBusk is uniquely qualified to tackle this challenging set of circumstances: he has a thorough understanding of nasal anatomy and a keen eye to achieve results that will improve both the aesthetic appearance and functionality for a revision rhinoplasty patient.
Why Would You Need a Revision Rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty patient may seek improvements and a revision of their original surgery for a variety of reasons. The initial surgery might not have achieved the desired aesthetic result; for example, you may want to further improve the appearance of your nasal tip, dorsal hump, or nostrils.
Other revision rhinoplasty candidates may require surgery purely for functional reasons: poor rhinoplasty surgery results often lead to breathing difficulties; other patients request improvement of a deviated septum. Revision rhinoplasty can provide much-needed remedies in many cases.
Differences between Primary Rhinoplasty and Revision Rhinoplasty
Primary and revision rhinoplasty share similar goals—reshaping the nose to improve aesthetics and function. However, revision rhinoplasty is often desired for:
- Correcting asymmetries that resulted from previous surgery
- Reshaping Nostrils
- Correcting or improving the nasal tip or bridge
- Managing too little or too much alteration from previous surgery
- Improving and correcting breathing issues
Dr. DeBusk recognizes the emotional context of a revision rhinoplasty procedure and is especially sensitive in his care, given your past experiences may have been difficult or distressing.
- Facial reconstruction expert
- Completed 5-year Ear-Nose-Throat Surgery residency
- Over 10 years of experience treating the head and neck
- Performed over 300 cosmetic and functional facial procedures
- Extensive experience in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery
I had a septoplasty and rhinoplasty surgery at the same time with Dr. Debusk. He is the most caring doctor I have ever seen. My surgery went smoothly and beautifully with no stress and pain. He is a great doctor at the same time he is a very nice human. I definitely had the best experience and will recommend it to anyone who wants to do this but has a fear of surgery or any other reasons…

The Role of the Surgeon in Revision Rhinoplasty
The role of a surgeon in revision rhinoplasty goes beyond technical skills. It involves comprehensive patient care, understanding your aesthetic goals, setting realistic expectations, and guiding you through the process—from consultation to recovery.
How to Choose the Right Surgeon for Your Revision Rhinoplasty
Look for a board-certified surgeon with specific expertise in revision rhinoplasty. They should thoroughly understand nasal anatomy, be skilled in the various possible surgical techniques required, and possess an artistic eye for aesthetics. It’s also important that they communicate effectively, understand your concerns, and inspire trust.
Dr. DeBusk has successfully performed hundreds of revision rhinoplasty surgeries; his enjoyment of this challenging area of practice inspired him to pursue advanced rhinoplasty training and devote himself to perfecting secondary rhinoplasty procedures.
Preparing for Your Houston Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure
Initial Appointment
Your initial consultation allows you to discuss your concerns, goals, and medical history with Dr. DeBusk. He will examine your nose, considering its relationship and balance to your other facial features, and use state-of-the-art 3D imaging. These images allow you to visualize your results and make real-time adjustments so he clearly understands the picture you have in mind when you think of your ideal nose appearance.
Anesthesia Options for Secondary Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia for patient comfort and safety. Local anesthesia with sedation may be considered in some cases—Dr. DeBusk will recommend the best approach during your appointment.
The Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure
Revision rhinoplasty may be performed as an open or closed procedure, depending on the specifics of your case. Dr. DeBusk prefers an open rhinoplasty technique in most cases as it allows him to gain a complete view and full access to the nasal structures to achieve the most optimal aesthetic and functional outcome.
Each surgery plan is personalized to each patient’s goals, concerns, and facial anatomy but will typically involve precise modifications to the nasal skin, cartilage, and bone to achieve the desired results.
Handling Scar Tissue and Cartilage
Dealing with scar tissue and limited cartilage is common in revision nose surgery. Dr. DeBusk carefully removes, reshapes, or adds to the existing cartilage and meticulously handles scar tissue to ensure the best possible outcome. Cartilage grafts may be taken from the ribs when existing nasal cartilage is insufficient to properly support the nasal structure or create an aesthetically pleasing outcome.
Addressing a Deviated Septum
Your nasal septum is the thin medial bone and cartilage wall that vertically separates the nostrils. A deviated septum is commonly addressed with a septoplasty procedure during a secondary rhinoplasty; it can straighten a bent or crooked septum to improve symmetry as well as help you breathe easier.
Recovery Time
Recovery from revision rhinoplasty is similar to that of a primary rhinoplasty; it may be less or take longer, depending on the extent of your surgery plan. Dr. DeBusk will prescribe medication to ease discomfort, and your nasal splint and sutures will be removed at your 1-week post-op appointment. Most revision rhinoplasty patients feel comfortable showing off their results in public about 3-4 weeks after surgery; however, swelling may still be somewhat apparent.
Revision Rhinoplasty Results
You’ll see your revision rhinoplasty results evolving during the first few months of healing as swelling gradually subsides and your skin contracts. Be patient as your nose settles into its new size and shape; you’ll have a good idea of what your results will look like at the 4-month mark after initial healing has run its course. Revision rhinoplasty patients can expect to see final results 12-18 months after surgery. While you may feel your healing is complete long before the 1 year mark, it’s essential to maintain regular follow-ups with Dr. DeBusk so he can ensure that your recovery is progressing as expected.
Risks and Complications
As with any surgical procedure, revision rhinoplasties carry certain risks, including bleeding, infection, anesthesia complications, and unsatisfactory cosmetic results. However, choosing a facial plastic surgery specialist significantly minimizes these risks. Dr. DeBusk performs revision nose surgeries in our on-site, state-licensed ambulatory surgery center to prioritize your safety, comfort, and privacy.

The cost of revision rhinoplasty will depend on your goals, the surgical approach, and any additional procedures needed to achieve the desired results. Your fee quote will include facility and anesthesia-related fees and pre- and post-op appointments.

Complementary Procedures
For patients who want to experience a more complete transformation, we offer several other surgical procedures to enhance and balance facial features including:
- Chin augmentation may also be considered for patients who want to improve facial symmetry by bringing the chin into balance with the nose.
- Facelift or a neck lift can address signs of aging, such as sagging skin and wrinkles, to achieve a more youthful, refreshed look.
- Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) removes excess skin and fat from around the eyes, reducing puffiness and droopiness.
- Brow lift can help lift the eyebrows to a more youthful position and smooth forehead wrinkles.
Dr. DeBusk will guide you through the options most suitable for your specific goals and needs if you would like to address other areas of your face.
Dr. Debusk is truly the best. I stumbled upon him because I had basal cell carcinoma and had to have reconstructive surgery on my nose. Dr. Debusk took the time to explain the surgery, answer questions and spend the time needed with me to calm my nerves. I can’t say enough good things about him.

Am I a Good Candidate for Revision Rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty patient seeking revision surgery is a good candidate if they are dissatisfied with the results of their primary rhinoplasty, are in good health, have realistic expectations, and want to improve the appearance or function of their nose.
Frequently Asked Questions About Revision Rhinoplasty
How many times can I get revision nose surgery?
There is no hard and fast rule about how many times you can undergo revision rhinoplasty; however, multiple previous nose surgeries carry increased risk and complexity, and achieving optimal results becomes more challenging.
How long should a rhinoplasty patient wait before undergoing another operation?
We recommended that each rhinoplasty patient waits at least one year after the original rhinoplasty to allow adequate time for healing and for the final results to develop before considering revision surgery options.
Will revision rhinoplasty correct my breathing problems?
Yes, if your previous nose operation caused breathing issues or if they existed beforehand and were not addressed, a revision procedure can almost always be tailored to resolve breathing issues.
Does revision rhinoplasty leave more scarring?
Not in all cases—Dr. DeBrusk will place the incision within the existing scar during your revision if possible. If your previous rhinoplasty was completed using a closed technique (no external incisions), you may have a new scar along the columella (the base of your nose) to accommodate an open surgical technique. Dr. DeBusk places his incisions to leave virtually invisible scars.
Can revision rhinoplasty fix a collapsed nose?
Yes, revision rhinoplasty can address a collapsed nose, which usually results from removing too much cartilage during the initial rhinoplasty. The procedure typically involves adding support to the nose using cartilage grafts.
