How is Tummy Tuck surgery different if you’re Plus Sized?

The primary difference between a tummy tuck for plus sized women and a traditional tummy tuck is your BMI, or body mass index. If you are over the 30-pound range of your ideal weight, you are considered to be “plus-size.” For a plus-sized patient, the quantity of fat being removed and the extent of the surgery being performed are typically more than what is performed in a traditional tummy tuck.

You don’t need to at an ideal weight to undergo a tummy tuck

As we are continually pushing the boundaries with surgery as technology develops and more research is conducted, being near your ideal weight prior to surgery is something that is no longer necessary for many patients. It is always optimal to be closer to your ideal weight when undergoing surgery but advances in surgical technique allows Dr. Basu to assist those who have more difficulty losing weight and are carrying enough to be considered plus-size. The best first step with any procedure is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Basu to see how he can help you to achieve your cosmetic goals.

Repairing the abdomen

For a plus-sized patient, you may only want to reduce hanging excess skin and fat or require surgical repair of a hernia or weakened abdominal muscles. These corrections to your body, along with the removal of larger quantities of excess fat can give you the significant boost in confidence, health, and motivation that they need to maintain a more sculpted figure. Many plus-sized women who come in for a  tummy tuck find that they find it far easier to shed weight after a tummy tuck, as it is easier to exercise with repaired muscles and less excess fat, skin, and tissue in the way.

A traditional tummy tuck or a higher-BMI tummy tuck?

A traditional tummy tuck is typically for people who have lost a significant amount of weight or are at a healthy weight, either after pregnancy, changes in diet and lifestyle, or bariatric surgery. The excess skin and stretched or split abdominal muscles need to be corrected surgically, as they are unable to heal naturally on their own. The traditional tummy tuck is generally for those who are within a close range of their ideal weight but who need help to resolve the issues of excess skin and fat and require surgery to tighten abdominal muscles.
