It is critical to Do Your Homework before opting for cosmetic surgery. Not only is it important to research your procedures/surgeries, it is even more important to research your surgeon, before even thinking about booking a consultation. The necessity of finding a surgeon who is properly board-certified in Plastic surgery cannot be stressed enough to anyone looking into any procedure. Over the years there has been more and more findings of devastating outcomes for patients who have settled with unlicensed ‘surgeons’ or surgeons who are not certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Also, recently a loop hole in New York’s laws allows for any doctor to perform plastic surgery, whether they are board certified in plastic surgery on not. Think about it– in 2014 in the United States, anyone (a pediatrician, your OB/GYN, and even your dentist) can take a weekend course and put up their shingle and advertise they are a cosmetic surgeon! These facts alone give all the more reason to do research before trusting anyone with your body.
Buttock Augmentations and Sculpting are on the rise and some say Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian are the inspiration for this trend. However, some people do not want, or cannot afford, to drop a couple thousand dollars on cosmetic surgery. Instead, they have gone to motel rooms, garages, and the like to pay a couple hundred for illegal injections. These injections, with unknown fillers, may promise a wonderful look immediately after the surgery. However, they cause serious medical problems as the illegal fillers spread to other parts of the body and has often been lethal. These fillers have been found to include cement, crazy glue, kitchen oil, industrial grade silicone, and even Fix-a-Flat! On top of pain, discomfort, and serious health issues when the body decides to reject these items, the patient ends up paying even more in medical bills than they would have if they had just gone to a legal, licensed, and properly board certified plastic surgeon. Needless to say, it just is not worth it when it comes to taking short cuts with your body.
Patients wanting a procedure done in New York who are not looking for a short cut are being misled into the hands of doctors who are not board certified Plastic Surgeons. The reason is a loophole in the New York State Law that allows any doctor (with any or no specialty training) to perform plastic surgery, and on top of that they are allowed to do so without an anesthesiologist or nurse assistance. With this loop hole these providers are also able to do procedures in non-inspected operating rooms as long as they use local anesthesia.
As the demand for cosmetic procedures rises, it is critical to have any surgical procedure done only in a fully accredited surgical facility by a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
