Beautiful breasts and toned tummies are just as attractive as ever; however, a new area of the body is quickly gaining more attention, thanks in part to celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez: the buttocks!
Women (and men) who admire a curvaceous, round buttocks can opt for a plastic surgery procedure with Houston plastic surgeon Bob Basu called the “Brazilian Butt Lift.” Named as an homage to the beautiful, shapely backsides found on the beaches of Rio, the butt augmentation procedure uses the patient’s own fat (donated from another area of the body) to add contour and volume to the buttocks.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 10,000 butt lifts were performed in 2013 (up 16 percent from 2012). The president of ASPS, Dr. Robert X. Murphy, pointed out an interesting shift in plastic surgery culture when he told NBC News:
“Plastic surgery used to be a reduction specialty; so, when we did nose jobs, we reduced the nose. But now, as we are more sensitive to ethnicity and different body types, we sometimes augment the nose. Well, same thing with the buttocks.”
What Happens During a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Brazilian butt lift is a two-stage procedure. First, Dr. Basu will harvest fat from the patient’s hips, thighs, back or abdomen. He will purify the fat and prepare it for reinjection. Then, he injects the fat strategically into specific areas of the buttocks, concentrating on the upper quadrant to achieve a lifted, perky appearance. Because not all of the injected fat will survive, he may over-inject the buttocks with more fat than is needed in order to produce the desired final results.
Patients who are very thin and do not have enough donor fat may be encouraged to gain weight prior to their procedure, or Dr. Basu will advise of other alternatives to fat injections.
Why Patients Love the Brazilian Butt Lift
There are quite a few advantages to using the Brazilian butt lift technique. Many patients feel safer and more comfortable using fat — a naturally occurring substance — than a foreign object, especially after hearing stories about people who developed serious complications or died from injections of unnatural substances like cement and non-medical silicone.
Another major advantage to the Brazilian butt lift technique is that the patient benefits from having the donor area of the body (e.g., abdomen, thighs, hips) liposuctioned. By redistributing the fat, Dr. Basu simultaneously improves the shape of the buttocks and slims the hips and thighs for an altogether pleasing result.
