During a rhinoplasty or “nose job,” even minuscule adjustments can impact your nose’s appearance and functionality. So, effective communication during your consultation is paramount to achieving the look you envision and improving or maintaining the critical functions of your nose.
Here, in part 2 of this 2-part series, rhinoplasty surgeon Dr. Taylor DeBusk shares how you can make the most of your rhinoplasty consultation and feel confident moving forward with nose surgery.
(In case you missed it, you can read part 1 of How do I explain the nose I want to my plastic surgeon? to learn the anatomy of the nose, common aesthetic and functional issues, and how Dr. DeBusk corrects them.)
Your rhinoplasty consultation
After you have the lingo down from our previous blog, you can walk into your consultation with a better understanding of your nose and the features we can adjust.
In this episode of the plastic surgery podcast Behind the Double Doors, Dr. Taylor DeBusk discusses 5 common concerns rhinoplasty patients have before their surgery.

Keep in mind that rhinoplasty isn’t a one-size-fits-all procedure, so be open and honest about what you want to preserve and what you want to change.
- Do you feel your nose bridge is too broad, narrow, or crooked?
- Is the tip too bulbous or too pointed?
- Are your nostrils too flared or too constricted?
- Do you have problems breathing through your nose?
- What do you like about your nose that you don’t want to change?
The more detailed you are, the easier it is to tailor your rhinoplasty surgery so we achieve the look you want the first time.
Bring inspo photos
If there are celebrities, influencers, or even a loved one with a nose shape you admire, bring their photos along. Descriptions like “I just want my nose to be smaller” leave a lot to the imagination, so a picture of someone with a nose size you like provides a visual representation of your ideal nose, and we can use the photo as a starting point for designing your surgery plan.
About 5-10% of rhinoplasty patients seek a secondary rhinoplasty, so choose a surgeon who understands your desired results and has the skill to deliver them.
If you’re seeking rhinoplasty to repair your nose after injury, bring photos of your nose (from all angles, if possible) so we can restore your nose’s previous shape as closely as possible and fine-tune any aspects you didn’t love. These photos are also helpful if you’re seeking revision rhinoplasty.
Talk to your surgeon about realistic expectations
It’s essential to understand that there are limits to what surgery can achieve—the goal is enhancement, not perfection. “Inspo” photos are excellent tools to help communicate your desires, but what you see in a photo may not be achievable with your unique anatomy. During the consultation, we’ll discuss what changes would harmonize best with your overall facial structure so your results appear natural and you maintain or regain optimal functionality.
