Intro (00:06):
This is Behind the Double Doors with Dr. Bob Basu.

Dr. Bob Basu (00:12):
I’m Dr. Bob Basu, and today I’ve brought a special guest from our beautiful Galleria of Post Oak Medical Spa. Iman is our licensed aesthetician. Her patients tell us every day how much they love her attention to detail and passion for helping people have beautiful skin. Welcome, Iman.

Iman (00:28):
Hi, how are you?

Dr. Bob Basu (00:29):
I’m doing great. So thank you for being with us. You’re here to talk to us about your top three favorite aesthetician or Medispa treatments. So what are your top three? What are your must haves? What do you recommend?

Iman (00:41):
So my top three have to be microneedling, CoolSculpting and HydraFacial.

Dr. Bob Basu (00:46):
Okay. So let’s start with microneedling. So for our listeners, what is it? Who’s it for, and what can you treat with microneedling?

Iman (00:55):
Microneedling, it’s a minimally invasive procedure. It is good for all things texture in the skin. So I always recommend it to patients who want to minimize the appearance of poor size, help with fine lines, acne scarring. It’s also good for pigmentation and pretty much it is a bunch of little needles that puncture the skin. Throughout the treatment, you get about 3 million microchannels in the skin and it pretty much tricks the skin into thinking that it needs to heal itself. The injuries though, are precise injuries, so they’re not actually going to damage the skin. And what it does is it makes your body stimulate collagen, so it helps fill in any texture and fine lines.

Dr. Bob Basu (01:36):
Okay. So collagen production, which is always a good thing, right?

Iman (01:40):
Right.

Dr. Bob Basu (01:40):
But you mentioned needling or needles, and I know for some of our listeners needles means it might hurt. So does microneedling hurt?

Iman (01:48):
Actually, it doesn’t. So I know it sounds scary and a lot of times patients come in super scared. Patient comfort is our number one priority, so we always like to get them nice and numbed before, and surprisingly it does not hurt. If anything, it just feels like a vibration or even a tickling sensation.

Dr. Bob Basu (02:10):
So Iman, how do you numb the patients?

Iman (02:12):
So we use a really good numbing cream 30 minutes prior to the procedure. Just let it sit on there, and then we cleanse the skin. And then after those 30 minutes, they’re super numb and they barely feel it.

Dr. Bob Basu (02:24):
Awesome. And so with a microneedling treatment, will patients have a downtime?

Iman (02:29):
There’s a little bit of downtime. Um, usually it’s about two to five days, so I wouldn’t do it a day before a big photo shoot or an event coming up. But you will be significantly healed by the next day, so it’s not too bad.

Dr. Bob Basu (02:43):
So a little bit of redness for about a day or two or three days. Right. Don’t plan a major engagement. Don’t go to a big holiday event. Or if you have a photo shoot the next day, it’s probably not a good idea to get microneedling. But if you’re planning three to five days in advance, then they should be okay. Right?

Iman (02:57):
Right, exactly.

Dr. Bob Basu (02:59):
So what kind of results can patients expect from microneedling?

Iman (03:03):
So after microneedling, you can expect to have smoother skin. You’ll notice that your pores will start shrinking, Your fine lines will get clear. Overall, you’ll notice a nice glow in your skin.

Dr. Bob Basu (03:17):
And so what kind of things do people say to you about the results?

Iman (03:21):
So they love the results. They notice a significant change in their poor size in whatever they were targeting, whether it be fine lines or acne scarring. They’re just noticing an overall glow. They feel like they look nice and rested. So we’re getting good results, especially I always recommend doing at least three to four treatments. And ideally if you do those three to four, you will have amazing results.

Dr. Bob Basu (03:46):
Excellent, excellent. Let’s move on to your second favorite treatment, which is uh, HydraFacial. So tell our listeners what is HydraFacial?

Iman (03:54):
So the HydraFacial is one of my favorites because basically it is a combination of a chemical peel and microdermabrasion. I like to think of it as a power wash to the face. So it cleans out the pores, iinjects in a glycolic salicylic peel, which is good for brightening and decongesting the pores. And then I also inject antioxidants and hyaluronic acid into the skin. So it’s hydrating as well.

Dr. Bob Basu (04:22):
Awesome. So I know we see advertisements about HydraFacial all over the place. So can you tell us how is the HydraFacial at a plastic surgery office better than the one you might find anywhere, like at a salon or, or just at a day spa?

Iman (04:36):
Yeah, absolutely. So here at a plastic surgeon office, you can expect to be getting quality products. A lot of med spas advertise their treatment as HydraFacial, and it’s not necessarily using the HydraFacial machine. And then also we have extensive training as well. So before we even do a treatment on a patient, there’s a lot of training within our company and also with the HydraFacial company.

Dr. Bob Basu (05:05):
So what can you expect from the treatment?

Iman (05:08):
So you can expect glowing skin. One thing I really like about the HydraFacial is that it’s painless. So a lot of people don’t like getting facials because of the manual extractions. They can be quite painful. With HydraFacial, it pretty much suctions out all of the impurities from the skin and it’s relatively painless and there’s no downtime either. If anything, you might have a little bit of redness for a couple of hours, but I always recommend it to people who have an event coming up, whether it’s a wedding or going on vacation just to give you a nice glow.

Dr. Bob Basu (05:44):
Awesome. So no downtime except for maybe a few hours, but you’re good to go with the next day.

Iman (05:49):
Yep.

Dr. Bob Basu (05:50):
And what are your patients telling you about their treatments and their results?

Iman (05:54):
Oh, they love it. I tell everyone, when you start doing HydraFacials, you’re gonna be hooked, especially in combination with dermaplaning, because dermaplaning, it’s pretty much a form of exfoliation. Using a surgical blade, it gets rid of all of the dead skin and peach fuzz. And then after that, when you go in with the HydraFacial, your skin is like a glazed donut, like <laugh>, you just look so glowy and dewy. Okay. And there’s literally nothing on your skin, so.

Dr. Bob Basu (06:25):
Awesome. Awesome. Okay. And then the third favorite or top favorite treatment was the CoolSculpting. Yes. So what is CoolSculpting and who’s a good candidate for it?

Iman (06:34):
So CoolSculpting is amazing. You can think of it as a noninvasive liposuction. Basically it freezes away fat cells and they drain out naturally through the lymphatic system. So people who are good candidates for CoolSculpting are people who have subcutaneous pinchable fat that’s just right underneath the skin. People who have visceral fat that’s underneath the muscle wouldn’t benefit from it. It’s good for people who are close to their ideal weight. They just have a little bit of stubborn fat that no matter how much they diet or exercise, it just won’t shed off of them.

Dr. Bob Basu (07:11):
So how does CoolSculpting differ from another modality that we have called Emsculpt?

Iman (07:17):
So Emsculpt is also an awesome treatment. That one is for muscle stimulation. So I like to think of it as the non-invasive bbl. It can help tone and flatten your stomach and it can build your glutes through muscle stimulation. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. So actually I recommend to a lot of patients that they start off with CoolSculpting to get rid of the unwanted fat. And once that’s gone, then we move on to EmSculpt for the toning and sculpting.

Dr. Bob Basu (07:46):
So they, they can go hand in hand, just they work in different areas.

Iman (07:49):
Right. And I have a lot of patients who are doing both at the same time.

Dr. Bob Basu (07:53):
And how fast can you see Emculpt results?

Iman (07:57):
Emscupt results over the course of three months, you’ll see the final results. And for Emsculpt I recommend four treatments.

Dr. Bob Basu (08:04):
Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. And how frequently do you have to do each treatment?

Iman (08:07):
So within the span of two weeks, you wanna do all four treatments with at least a day in between each treatment.

Dr. Bob Basu (08:14):
Excellent. So Iman, I’ve heard that you are an alum of CoolSculpting University, CSU.

Iman (08:21):
Yes.

Dr. Bob Basu (08:22):
What’s CoolSculpting University? What did you learn there? Tell us more about it.

Iman (08:26):
So at CoolSculpting University, I learned all about the technology, the history behind CoolSculpting, which is actually so fascinating to me. They actually discovered Cryolipolysis, the way that freezing actually gets rid of fat, they discovered it through children who sucked on popsicles and they noticed that the kids were getting dimples in their cheeks. So they did a lot more research and then came up with CoolSculpting. One of the most important things that we learned was the markings. Markings are very important because if you don’t do the right markings, you will not get the best result.

Dr. Bob Basu (09:05):
So Iman, tell us about your background.

Iman (09:08):
So I actually have worked in skincare for going on five years now. Initially when I graduated high school, I wanted to work as a dietician, so I got my Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition and Foods. As I was going to school, I was also working in skincare part-time. And my passion for skincare grew over time, as I was working in the field. I just realized I love talking about it. I could talk about it all day and never get tired of it. And I was just so happy in the setting. So it just motivated me to become an aesthetician. And also my own skincare journey also motivated me. I used to have cystic acne and hyperpigmentation and using good skin care products, medical grade products, and getting facials, that changed my confidence. And I wanna help other people feel the same way.

Dr. Bob Basu (10:06):
And if you’re listening to this podcast, I can tell you that Iman has flawless skin. So <laugh>.

Iman (10:11):
Thank you.

Dr. Bob Basu (10:12):
Now what do you, what do you love about being an aesthetician?

Iman (10:16):
I love giving people that confidence. I know how it feels to not want to leave the house without makeup and wanting to hide what you’re insecure about. So now that I’ve cleared my own skin and I know what it feels like on the other side, I wanna help people feel the same way.

Dr. Bob Basu (10:33):
Awesome. And here’s a different question I wanna ask you. If you were stranded on a desert island, it could only have one skincare product, which one would it be

Iman (10:44):
Easy. It would be sunscreen.

Dr. Bob Basu (10:47):
Sunscreen. Okay. And why?

Iman (10:49):
Because without sunscreen, you run the risk of aging, hyperpigmenting, getting skin cancer. It’s just, I honestly wouldn’t go a day without sunscreen. It is my go-to skincare product.

Dr. Bob Basu (11:02):
Great advice. So last question is, you are based at our Post Oak Galleria office location. What are some of the one to two best secrets of the Post Oak area? And if you wanted to make an afternoon of it, where else would you go in the area?

Iman (11:18):
Okay. Well, you would have to check out the Galleria Mall. Also, Whole Foods in the area is really nice. They have a two story Whole Foods, you have to check that out as well. Another nice spot, it’s kind of like a lounge would, I would say Prey they have really good drinks. So after you come to Basu and get your skin care, you can go on over to Prey and have a good night out.

Dr. Bob Basu (11:42):
Which is right next door to us. So yes, cocktails are very close by.

Iman (11:47):
Yes.

Dr. Bob Basu (11:48):
Well, we’re wrapping up our podcast. Thank you, Iman, for being with us and sharing us your insights as an aesthetician expert for skincare and all good things for glowing great.

Iman (11:58):
