6 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Botox

Twenty-plus years since its introduction to the market, Botox® remains a staple for skin rejuvenation—almost as basic as moisturizer and sunscreen! It’s performed at nearly twice the rate of dermal fillers, and it far outperforms laser treatments and other anti-aging touch-ups. But, even if you’re a Botox devotee, you may not know these interesting facts about its history.

Botox was around even before it was FDA-approved in 2002 to treat wrinkles

Botox, a type of neuromodulator, was originally developed to treat eye muscle spasms so that patients could avoid surgery for this condition. When injected into the muscle, Botox temporarily relaxes it—treating both spasms and, of course, wrinkles!

It’s manufactured in Ireland

A small Ireland town (population 6,000) called Westport has produced Botox Cosmetic—all of it—since 1994.

Botox costs more for men

Men may need up to twice as much Botox to achieve the same muscle-relaxing effects as women, since men have naturally stronger facial muscles. Since Botox (and other neuromodulators) are priced by the unit, men tend to end up paying more! (Luckily, men often want less correction than women.)

Several studies suggest it can help with depression

Botox for depression has been the subject of numerous studies, with several suggesting it may help! Many scientists think this may be related to Botox preventing you from frowning and scowling, leading your brain to follow suit with more positive thoughts and feelings.

It can reduce sweating in your underarms

Botox doesn’t just stop muscles from contracting! It can also tame your sweat glands if you have hyperhidrosis, the medical term for excessive sweating. Watch our Certified Master Injector, Denae, treat a patient with hyperhidrosis in the video below—she starts with a starch test to visualize where the patient’s sweat glands are located for a more precise treatment:

You don’t have to get brand-name Botox

Botox did come first, but Botox alternatives Xeomin, Dysport, Jeuveau, and (most recently) Daxxify work very similarly. Some injectors swear by one over the other, but at the end of the day, each is comparable in terms of formula, safety, effectiveness, and cost—it’s much more important to find an experienced medical injector for your treatment!
